Volleyball final caps off annual fest at SGC Namchi

GANGTOK,:
‘Aarohan 2026’, the annual fest of Sikkim Government College, Namchi, concluded
Wednesday after nearly two weeks of sporting, literary, and cultural
activities.

The
highlight of the concluding day was the five-setter inter-departmental boys’
volleyball tournament final between Department of Physical Education and
Department of Commerce in which the former won. Emmanuel Subba was adjudged Man
of the Match, informs a press release.

The
concluding day of the fest also witnessed the finals of boys’ and girls’ tug of
war competitions along with cultural performances. In the tug of war finals,
the Education Department emerged champions in the girls’ category by defeating
Physical Education Department. In the boys’ category, Geography Department
defeated History Department to claim the title.

The
cultural segment of the programme featured traditional Gurung, Nepali, and
Tamang dances, along with musical performances by students, adding vibrancy to
the concluding ceremony.

Aarohan
2026 featured a wide range of activities including indoor and outdoor sports,
debate competitions, quiz contests, essay writing, singing, fashion shows, and
other literary and cultural events. Hundreds of students participated across
various competitions according to their interests and abilities. Food stalls
set up by students also offered visitors an opportunity to enjoy authentic
local delicacies.

At
the end of the programme, prizes for all literary, indoor, and outdoor
competitions were distributed.

Retired
government officer Santa Pradhan was present as the chief guest, while the
guests of honour included Namchi DC Anupa Tamling and senior SP Sonam Doma
Bhutia.

Addressing
the gathering, the district collector emphasized the shared responsibility of
building a safe, just, and progressive society. She stated that students, as
the future leaders of Sikkim, have an important role to play alongside the
government and administration in shaping society. She encouraged students to
stay away from anti-social influences, respect systems and justice, learn from
failures, and develop into disciplined, responsible, and healthy individuals,
while assuring them of the administration’s continued support and protection.

Senior
SP Sonam Doma Bhutia highlighted the importance of maintaining good physical
and mental health while creating awareness among students about criminal
activities such as cybercrime, online addiction, and theft-related offences.
She urged students to remain alert, responsible, and disciplined so they can
contribute towards building a safer and more responsible society.

Another
highlight of the event was the felicitation of Dal Bahadur Das, who retired in
February this year after serving the institution as a bus driver since 2006.
The institution paid tribute to his dedicated service and valuable
contributions to the college community.

Before
the inter-departmental final, an exhibition volleyball match was played between
the teachers and Students’ Representative Council (SRC) members, in which the
teachers emerged victorious.
